This log home was once owned by a San Francisco 49er football player. It sits above the San Francisco Bay and overlooks the city. This home was going to require a lot of work to bring it back to it’s original condition. Take a look….

The existing acrylic top coating had turned really dark, the multiple layers of acrylic top coats applied over the years had to be removed using the walnut shell blasting method.

This project was also going to include a restoration of the garage and multiple log repairs and (larger) corner post installations.

Using finely ground walnut shell, we remove the existing coating as lightly as possible trying to minimize the effects on the wood surface below. Blasting is an art form and should be done by qualified operators at the helm.

The benefits of walnut shell blasting is that it is a dry method, but, that being said–it can also be a very dusty experience on the inside of the home. We take every precaution to cover and protect precious items and furniture, and contain the blast media, but most log homes (chinked log homes excluded) may need a professional cleaning following the restoration when using the blasting method.

Once the blasting process is complete, we go to work on power sanding and detail sanding every square inch of log surface. Our goal is to leave a perfectly prepared surface ready to accept Lovitt’s Natural Gold oil base finish or Lovitt’s Emerald Gold modified oil base finish (low VOC).

As the restoration was proceeding on the exterior, our carpenters went to work on the extreme rot damage on the front entry way caused by faulty gutters that allowed water to cascade down both sides of the entry way gable. Here, we have removed the front door entry way system and have discovered the rot has spread into the subflooring and rim joists.

The garage is coming along nicely, the dormers are being sanded with power sanders and detail specialty sanders, we have the specialty tools that no one else has, we know because we have made a lot of them ourselves! This garage looks just like the log home next to it, but is actually a log sided building.

The decks has been restored using Lovitt’s Cleaner & Brightener using the power washing method. We don’t blast decking on any circumstances, it is not required. Here, the deck has been sanded and ready for stain following the cleaning.

Most of these breezeway post logs were rotted out at the bottoms and had to be replaced, the new logs along with the tongue and groove soffits have been sanded and are ready for staining.
